Ute Friederike Schernau, born 1978 in Essen, studied design at the FH Bielefeld with emphasis on documentary photography and was standing the test by her sophisticated works and superior intellectuality and ability for reflection.
Basically the artist shows an extraordinary interest in theoretical, social and feminist issues. Artistically she is particular interested in the representation of the human body for the last 5 years. In her photographs she discusses and questions the social role assignment between the sexes, a question which is relevant more than ever in the changing facility of the role model of a woman. The issue relates particularly to the generation of the artist, because the changing image of women transformes the image of men or rather calls for it.
The constitution of masculinity in her series "LADS": How many female attributes do young men have and in what kind of relationship the represented person participates? Evokes the Adonis-like picture a difference in the reception at the female and male viewers? Consequently she dedicates her constitution of femininity: In "UNCOVERED AND VEILED" she explores the female body with similar issues.
Her photographic work is the staging that is set up in consultation with the models. Schernau prefers the use of artificial light, which immoderates the images in their aesthetic appearance, freeing them from the individuality of the persons represented, making them universal.
In the series "ALL ABOUT EVE (AND ADAM)" Ute Friederike Schernau now addresses the relationship of the sexes. Her attitude here is postfeminist.
